Gijs Van Winkelhof

Gijs Van Winkelhof is a Dutch pianist, composer and music producer.

At the age of 3, Gijs taught himself to play the piano and by the age of 10, he was already composing and producing music. In 2007, Gijs graduated with honors, from the Utrecht University of the Arts. He majored in Composition for the Media, which focused on writing music for film and theatre. During his studies he did an internship at the music department of the Dutch televison series ‘Goede Tijden, Slechte Tijden’.

In 2008, Van Winkelhof wrote the music for the song ‘Jij maakt het verschil’ (‘You make the difference’), which was recorded by the well known Dutch singer/comedian and television host Paul de Leeuw. He composed the music for several musicals such as ‘Michiko’ (2013) and ‘Alice in Anderland’ (2015). Gijs has also produced music for television shows such as ‘Holland’s Got Talent’ and ‘Telekids’.

As a pianist, he has performed in over 50 different European castles and has performed with various artists including Broadway musical performer Pia Douwes, Joke de Kruijf, Tony Neef and Emma Heesters.
In July 2018 he performed twice at the Electro Dance Musical festival ‘Tomorrowland’ in Belgium.

His own piano arrangements have given him many opportunities such as an invitation to perform in Tokyo at the Suntory Hall and the Yamaha Hall with Japanese soprano Yoko Maria Tsukuda.  On May 21 2018 Gijs made his debut at Carnegie Hall in New York City with Yoko Maria. On July 18th returned to Japan to perform at Suntory Hall.

One of his YouTube arrangements was used in a performance for vice president Joe Biden.

Gijs has been performing several times a week via live stream apps including Periscope and Facebook Live since May 2015. With the ability to play the piano by ear, Gijs is able to take live requests from his viewers. In October 2016, he was awarded VIP gold by the Periscope team.

In february 2017 he was invited to speak and perform at Summit Live, a Live Stream conference at the Millenium Biltmore hotel in Los Angeles.

By popular demand, pianist and composer Gijs van Winkelhof will host a solo concert on September 15th, 2018 at theatre het Lichtruim, Bilthoven, The Netherlands.

Gijs has performed at many concerts, accompanying many artists, from Tokyo to the Carnegie Hall in New York City. This time, however, Gijs himself will be the center of attention, as pianist, singer and composer.

The concert will consist of a wide variety of music. On the grand piano, he will perform his own arrangements of music which inspired him. He will also play his own compositions.

Gijs van Winkelhof graduated with honor from the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht with a major in composition for media. He wrote music for, among others, Paul de Leeuw, Telekids, several musicals and theatre productions. Since 2015, Gijs performs twice a week live on Periscope, Twitter’s livestreaming service. Thousands of people from all over the world watch his broadcasts.


Film- and theatre compositions


The song ‘Free’ is from the soundtrack of Michiko.
Michiko is a Japanese fairytale written by Lyzette Havinga and Petra Visser. The original Dutch lyrics of the song are by Petra Visser and the music is composed by Gijs van Winkelhof.


On June 26th 2016 Gijs van Winkelhof released the new single ‘Dream Out Loud’ on iTunes. This single is from the Dutch musical “Alice in Anderland”. The music is composed by film- and theatre composer Gijs van Winkelhof and the lyrics are by Petra Visser.

Gijs van Winkelhof wrote the music for the song ‘Jij maakt het verschil’, recorded by the Dutch television comedian, singer and actor Paul de Leeuw and released on his album ‘Het Wordt Winter’.
